Description

rhythm rage is the long awaited sequel to the extremely popular Beatstar pro, where you can take your mad pushing buttons to the beat skills to the next level.

where Beatstar had a comparatively simple concept of hear a single sound, hit the key on the next beat, Rhythm rage expands on that with a slightly more complex formula. Each level takes the form of a little task, whether that is wrapping along to the song Uptown funk, using a robotic lifter to heft crates around a factory, helping an evil king dispose of criminals with a rather musical gun and on the beat head chopping, or aiding Jago, the kung fu monk from the Killer instinct game series remember his combos by punching and kicking in time. The difference in Rhythm rage however is that the number of beats your required to wait, the amount of time to press or hold the keys, and the number of key presses required in each rhythm is not the same in each level. For example, with the evil king, you will occasionally get a "hay ho!" where you need to shoot on the third beat with the spacebar, or someone chanting "chop his head!" where a push of enter is needed on the beat after the word head. While with jago, you might need to remember two or three combo hits for example punch punch kick, followed by space space enter along with the rhythm, (this likely sounds rather more complex to explain than it actually is in practice).

As well as varying in rhythms and how much to tap and hold keys, you will also occasionally be needed to perform memory tasks, for example to use the lifting robot you might here a short sequence of in coming crates to grab, left right left right and hold enter, then be required to push along in time as you remember your position. This again probably sounds harder than it is, though bare in mind since the rhythms and style needed are fairly precise, expect to get a good work out for your funky skills.

Unlike in Beatstar, rather than each stage ending when you mess up, you will play each level to the end of the track and get an over all accuracy rating. In order to pass levels you will need to get a certain accuracy rating (which might take a good few tries especially on some of the harder stages), however as you might expect, achievements are available if you do well enough.

Created with The blastbay game toolkit The game now is abandonware. Furthermore, since antivirus programs read anything made with Bgt as a virus, you'll need to add an exception to windows defender in order to play the game. Though Oriol only now provides source code versions of his BGt projects on the above page, the audiogames archive do have a fully compiled version of the game, which can be downloaded at the above link.

Rhythm rage is one of those deceptively addictive games, you believe it a simple arcade romp for five minutes, then find you've spent half a day grappling with beats and memory. With the variety of tasks and sound, awesome atmosphere and of course some amazing music and challenge, this is definitely a game not to be missed.
