Description

Hearts is probably the most well known of a family of trick taking card games which includes Whist, Spades and Bridge, not the least because it has come with the Windows Operating system for many years. The game revolves around taking tricks. Each of the four players is dealt 13 cards at the beginning of the game, and each takes a turn playing a card, and the highest card in the suit which began the trick, or alternatively the highest heart will win the trick for that player and also let that player start the next trick. Winning tricks however is not the point of Hearts, since in hearts, the goal of the game is to avoid accumulating tricks containing cards in the hearts suit or indeed the queen of spades. For every heart a player gets, they will earn 1 penalty point, while the queen of spades earns them 13 points. however, if a player is able to collect all 13 hearts plus the queen of spades during the course of the game, instead of scoring 26 penalty points they will force all three other players to take 26 instead, this is known as shooting the moon and provides an extra element of strategy and risk. The game ends when one players score tops 100, and at that point the person with the fewest penalty points is the winner.

The BG version of hearts comes with four computer opponents to play against, and also keeps track of how often you win. In access terms, the game uses microsoft sapi to provide the voice, as well as containing high contrast graphics and several sound effects, and the ability to play midi music in the background while you play.
